Not every doctor’s visit is the same. Knowing the difference between an annual physical and a sick visit helps you book the right amount of time with your provider, and it can affect how your insurance processes the visit.

What an Annual Physical Covers

An annual physical, sometimes called a preventive or wellness visit, is about staying healthy rather than treating a new problem. At Right Care Family Medicine, it’s a chance to step back and look at your overall health with your provider. A typical visit includes:

  • A review of your medical history, family history and current medications
  • Blood pressure, weight and other vital signs
  • Age-appropriate screenings and vaccines
  • Lab work when it’s recommended for you
  • A conversation about sleep, stress, nutrition and physical activity

What a Sick Visit Is For

A sick visit, also called a problem-focused visit, addresses a specific new concern such as a cough, sore throat, rash, urinary symptoms or a minor injury. The visit centers on that problem: what’s causing it and what will help you feel better. Established patients can call to ask about same-day sick visits when appointments are available.

Can You Do Both in One Appointment?

Sometimes. If you bring up a new concern during your physical, your provider may address it during the same visit. Because preventive care and problem-focused care are billed differently, some insurance plans apply a copay or cost-sharing to the problem-focused portion. If you have several concerns, we may suggest a separate visit so each one gets the time it deserves.
